Fake Smile Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Without the EU, the UK would lose its status. Especially London, as it is now one of the world’s biggest financial centres. After brexit it will no longer be seen as a gateway to the EU for the likes of US banks. Other banks ahve already moved their headquarters back into the EU, taking staff with them. What is more, the UK is tied up. All the laws and legislations in place are mainly monitored by the EU. Take any industry, the EU regulations - let's say for food industries or tourism.. They will have to change so many laws, because the ones of the EU would be no longer valid. What year would that bring the UK to? For everything to change it would take so much time and money.. All in all, from my point of view, Brexit would result in the country giving up its influence in Europe, turning back the clock and retreating from the global power networks of the 21st century. The EU membership involved a worthwhile exchange of sovereignty for influence: in return for agreeing to abide by EU rules.

Working for a bank in London, I can’t see the financial hub of Europe changing from London. It’s unrealistic to expect that the top minds of the financial industry, who have got roots in London, will get up and completely change their lives because of this. People are forgetting it’s a Tory government in power, and as much as I disagree with them (and I’m a remainer), the one industry that they’ll definitely look after in the U.K. will be the private banking sector/finance - as that’s where most of their chums work and where they’ve come from. They’ll strike the deals required to ensure this doesn’t change. People also forget that between 13-18% of all products that are sold from the EU are purchased by the U.K, we’re still a huge market for them. They’ll miss us economically too. I genuinely think the reason why the EU were playing hard-ball was because the referendum was so close and there was a lot of pressure from the British public to undo it. The fact that the country have voted this way twice, is an indication that nothing has changed from the majority here and it’s clear that we can’t remain. I reckon they’ll be more likely to negotiate now that remain is categorically not an option, as it’s in their interest to have us as a trading partner. Finally, you could also argue that the fact we don’t have to comply with EU regulation and law allows us to act more autonomously and responsively to domestic issues, rather than worrying about abiding and conflicting with EU law primarily. Again, I voted remain but for reasons that differ to the ones you’ve stated. It’s clear the majority of the country wants to leave and I support the idea of democracy, so I’ve tried to look at it from the other side, even if it pains me.. Edited December 14, 2019 by `Ben 1
