When the asteroid passess Earth in 2029, it will be closer than a lot of our satelites. While it's passing, the Earths gravitational pull will have an effect on the asteroid, the effect it will have is unknown. What they can confirm is that it will make the asteroid swing and turn around, possibly going directly towards the earth. They've run simulations of what could happen if the gravitational pull of the earth makes the asteroid pick up speed; if it picks up enough speed the asteroid will puncture the Earth.
