Is it possible to get barrows gloves etc. without taking the XP from daero?

You can go to ape atoll back, all the guides are to old.

I would end up with 46 def by getting the XP and doing all the other quests.

Yes it is possible, you just go talk to Daero and choose the bottom option that says go back w/o getting xp. Its also how pures get addy gloves now.
