Gimp is a great program to play with graphics. I learned many techniques with GIMP before getting Photoshop.

Paint is a great program to use to learn to pixel. Although I prefer Paint.net as you can have layers to do certain sections which helps a lot.

Thanks for this, I had already had GIMP installed on my computer, but all I could really do that was kind of cool was blood splatters. Currently looking up some tut's on how to do other stuff for siggies! :) Going to try out Paint.NET. Anyone recommend this for freehand pixeling?
