Earthquake hits Ottawa - 5.5 magnitude

An earthquake hit Ottawa today at 1:41pm, with a magnitude of 5.5 at its center, about 61km north of the city. We'll update more as news breaks on our @ottawastart Twitter feed, and post updates to this blog later today. Here's some info from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Magnitude: 5.5

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 0:1:41:42PM

Location: 45.955°N, 75.546°W (epicenter appears to be north of Ottawa)

Depth: 19.2km

Region: Ontario-Quebec Border Region, Canada

Distances:

    * 49 km (31 miles) N (349°) from Cumberland, Ontario, Canada

    * 52 km (33 miles) N (10°) from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

    * 58 km (36 miles) NNE (16°) from Hull, Quebec, Canada

    * 61 km (38 miles) N (11°) from OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada

Location Uncertainty: horizontal +/- 11.5 km (7.1 miles); depth +/- 5.3 km (3.3 miles)

First not extremely minor earthquake to hit the area in a very very very VERY long time, felt from where I live (300+km away) to into Quebec (another 200~km) so it was quite large scale. 2012 here we come boys oxygen tanks and airtight barrels.

Well a 5.5 is in between, the highest is 10, as far as I know some buildings in Toronto had to be evacuated and I'm not sure the damage in Ottawa yet (I've had some friends living there say it was extremely bad in some places)

Won't know for probably another hour.

the only one i've ever felt was like a 3.4 i think, which is pretty minor here in california. then again 5.5 is 21x as strong as what i felt, every 1 point on the richter scale is 10x stronger than the last so that must have been pretty damn noticable lol

So basically, the quake only lasted a minute, and during that minute you spent 55 seconds trying to get upright, and then it all ended in dissapointment?

Tornado warnings across half of Ontario one just touched 20 min away and destroyed a trailer park.

Bro I was just out at the mall like 10 minutes agpo, come back and the sky's almost black with trees blowing heavily '-'

Time to play the drums to match up to the sound of the thunder; I shall be playing amongst the presence of the gods, gentlemen.
