Joseph Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 So i got 3 emails in my inbox today, all trying to recruit me to X program. June 1, 2009 Dear Economics Student, Congratulations on your success in your recent Principles of Economics course! Your name was passed on to the Honours committee based on your high achievement this year. If you have recently graduated, congratulations! It was a pleasure having you take a course in the Department of Economics and we wish you success in your next endeavour. If, on the other hand, you are still working on your undergraduate degree and are interested in making Economics your principal field of study, I want to draw your attention to the possibility of pursuing an Honours degree in the Department of Economics. Honours is an enriched program taken by students with superior ability and a keen interest in Economics. Classes are much smaller and some courses are specifically available for this category of students. Lectures are more intensive and may feature more active student involvement, such as presentat ions and class discussions. Honours students tend to form relationships with their peers, studying together and meeting each other throughout the year, in particular at some social events and at the annual Honours economics weekend retreat in January. Employment opportunities with an Honours degree are much better than with a General degree. Moreover, the Honours program forms the traditional preparation for graduate school if you are considering qualifying for a Masters degree or beyond that, a Ph.D. If you are interested in this challenging but rewarding program, this may be the best time to join it. On page 117 of the University's 2009/10 Undergraduate Calendar you find paragraph 4.3.2-4.3.4 re entry to and graduation from the Faculty of Arts Honours programs. Specifics on various Honours pro grams in Economics are given on pp. 139-140. In all instances B level performances in Economics and in Arts overall play important (if not essential) roles. Furthermore, on page 139 of the Undergraduate Calendar you find under the Economics' tabular material note no. 5 which specifies how theory courses in the General program may sometimes be used for credit toward the Honours degree. If you are interested in pursuing the Honours possibility at this time, please contact the Department of Economics General Office (501 Fletcher Argue; phone 474- 9207 or 474-6239) for names of the members of the Economics Honours Studies Committee and their availability during the next several mont hs. We hope to hear from you soon. In the meantime: have a pleasant spring and summer! On behalf of the Honours Studies Committee, Dr. Irwin Lipnowski Department of Economics University of Manitoba ---------------------------------------- I got two almost identical (names and addresses and phone numbers changed). apperantly I scored 96% in the course and they want to have my babies. The math and Statistics departments also want to have my babies. But seriously, same day, 3 almost identical emails. edit: http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/economics/faculty/ Email was from an address on that list anyways.
