more of a question but need help

i enter #finalownage today and i get a message that someone (dont remember who) is starting DDoS. so i ask some ppl in the irc and they say yes i am being ddosd, and the person who was starting it says nice net...but im also really confused about this cuz i thought when you get ddosd you lose internet connction, yet i could stilll talk to them on irc? so they told me to reboot my cpu which i did, and im now kinda scared to enter the foe irc.  also, i got the message in "SwiftIRC" not "#finalownage"

any help/advice/tell me if they was punking me?
