MAC vs PC

SO i currently use a desktop PC, it's a duo core, about 6 years old, and clogged full of shit. I need a laptop for GFX, but have concluded that, after many hours of searching, it is impossible to find a true comparison between mac and PC's.

So, i was looking at this HP:

http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Product.aspx?hpproduct=XV786PA

6GB of RAM, 750GB HD space 15.6" display. 1500 dollars i can get this for.

I don't have specifics on the mac, because i already know the most basic mac, which has 2GB of RAM, like 450GB HD space, is 1100 dollars, and it has a fucking 11" display.

Now, at the shop i asked what exactly makes the mac run better when it has a third of the RAM. She said the chipset/Ge-force graphics card that the mac uses is better suited to graphics.

No one can give me an actual reason why macs run better for GFX. I have to admit macs make GFX considerably easier/less frustrating. But on the other hand i don't trust apple, and they're a massive fucking rip-off.

SO can anyone give me an actual comparison or opinion please? 6GB of RAM, 15.6" display, 75-GB HDD for 1500.

OR

like 2.5k for a macbook pro with 2GB of RAM and "apparently" a superior processor.

edit: it may also be worth mentioning that the HP's i7 has 8cores, while the macs Ge-Force has a duo core, and yet i'm told it won't make a difference. I'm also not sure if the macs Ge Force has dedicated graphics or not.

Quite frankly I think paying that much just for a superior processor is ridiculous, am I right in saying that the processor is just what controls the speed of computer applications? It really doesn't need that decent a processor to run most GFX programmes, or internet browsers for that matter... On the other hand, the PC has 6gb of RAM, that's pretty fucking awesome, if you do play games, or HD videos, etc it will run them like a treat, whilst still being able to run the regular programmes fine. Windows is what you're used to, you're used to all the programmes that come with it, in all honesty, i'd say getting the Mac would be ridiculous, why pay 1k extra just to run programmes faster, when they're already fast enough? And also the fact that it will take some getting used to the layout and programmes. That's just my two cents, I may be wrong, I don't know a huge amount about computer specs.

I'm used to macs, i've used them before, and photoshop cs5 open GL rendering does chew through RAM a bit, that's why i'm wondering if whether a mac with a duo core processor can even handle it. Everyones like "Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force""Ge-Force", yet i can't actually find hard evidence to prove the Ge-Force is better then the i7's 8 cores.

No such thing as an i7 8 Core processor. It's a 4 core processor with Hyperthreading, potentially using 1 core as 2, if the program can make use of Hyperthreading. 4 Physical cores, 8 threads. On the note of processors, you have a 6 year old dual core? You must have either time travelled, or paid a fuck lot of money for that.

Anyway, OS X (Mac's version of Windows) is a lot more lightweight, and makes better use of memory etc. The OS also has very little chance of getting a virus, so is generally more secure. Automatic back ups etc. in general make it awesome for business etc. it also comes with a utility called "Bootcamp" which lets you install Windows on it if you wish to anyway, but you can't buy a Windows PC/Laptop and install OS X on it.

Geforce = nVidia = Graphics Chip.

i7 = Intel = Processor.

You can't compare a Graphics card to a processor, it doesn't work like that.

The HP has an ATI 5650, the Macbook Air (assuming you mean this) has a nVidia 320. The ATI is a better graphics card, simple as that. Geforce is just a name people have heard of, cos you see it on TV and shit all the time, so obviously your average retard will think it's better.

The Macbook Air also has "flash memory" AKA a solid state hard drive, meaning in general it can access programs etc. faster, but then again you could install a SSD into a Windows PC/Laptop (I have, big improvement).

Lots of ups and downs, price, spec etc. etc.

For me, i'd go for the PC, as I like to play games etc. which Macs are pretty bad for atm (although they're improving). For someone who does professional stuff, I'd recommend the Mac, purely because imo it's more secure and would get the job done just as well, and sometimes a little easier/simpler.

All the info i given by this person at the shop, who's meant to be a professional, is just a load of crap then, she obviously had no idea what she was saying, from now on i'll just ask you VxT, lol.

i said, "so what's the difference between the i5 and i7", she said "the i5 is a quad core and the i7 is double that" -.-

So in terms of performance, being able to fully render 3D animations and such in PS cs5, would the mac still keep up?

I won't be using it for gaming, so that's not an issue.

Majority of i5's in laptops aren't quad core, so she's probably wrong there too.

The Mac would most likely preform worse then the HP. Considering the software, photoshop is designed to work well on Windows aswell as Mac (I guess), so it's not more optimised for one. Comparing a 1.4GHz Dual Core to a 1.6GHz Quad Core (with Hyperthreading) seems pointless. I'm sure it would still do the job just as well, I just couldn't justify buying an expensive laptop with a processor which is of an old generation.

HP has better processor, better graphics. If you've never used a Mac before, I don't mean just once or twice, then I'd stick to Windows. Better laptop, better price (?).

I've used Windows since I started using PCs, so I'm biased, I'm sure if you asked someone whose used Macs for a long time, they'd say the Mac is the better buy, but I actually asked someone who worked for Apple what justifies the price of the Mac when they're lower spec, and the only reasonable answer was the software comes with programs Windows doesn't, like the ability to make your own website easily.

it doesnt really matter how much ram you have after a certain point, if the processor cant keep up with it it a waste, or will hurt your comp, idk if it will.

why do u need 6gig of ram for gfx. just get 4 gig of ram with a small hd, then like a 1 or 2tb external hd. i think it would be cheaper with the same performance for what you would be doing.

I don't see how people can say "why do u need 6gig of ram for gfx."

When was the last time you tried to render a 3D animation?

last night

in photoshop cs5 extended?

My PC fails with a duo core :\

I was joking, I have never tried to render a 3D animation XD
