What have all you cats over here been up to?

I got busted by my parents on june 4th so I sorta stopped posting over the summer then just never got back into it.

So I just got accepted into a university for computer security and computer science. Been learning a fair bit of java and might be starting a decent sized game once the semesters roll over and I get some free time. I'm about to start an advanced placement course in java too so it's pretty sweet. I'm clean and sober until i'm 18 too so that's pretty rad I guess.

I wanted to write games as a little chitlin. Then after taking a shit ton of graphic design type classes and web design my junior year of high school I took 2 computer pogramming courses at my highschool and it turned out I was pretty good at it and had motivation to do it. So then I took a few more this year and I'm really sold on the idea of doing it as a grown up.

Computer Security is more of a fallback because the government is ALWAYS hiring for that sort of shit with ridiculous wages.

But yeah mostly my interest in the subject and good job opportunities in the future. O and it's flexibility. It gives me an outlet to be artsy and shit (something I can't do regularly).

You're me, just in two years.. basically going on to do what i wanna do. Tell me, are you one of the most intelligent.. or are you just really motivated to do that stuff?

PS, if you could tell me the grades/courses i'd need to like, get into it, that would help me out a lot.

Hai btw, i remember you.

I'm not the most intelligent by far but I have a good sense for programming.

It's mostly logical thought process that makes you good. Like if you can follow whats happening in the program it's really easy to do, it's just learning the syntax and the more advanced features that makes you turn from ehh to a bossss.

But if I was you I would try to get into trigonometry if you want to do any sort of game development because there's so much of that when you start doing cool things. But you can self teach most of the fundamentals that help. Physics i pretty nice too but I haven't taken that yet.

Umm try and take as many programming courses that your school offers. It really gives you a boost in college. Like i'm about to take AP Java which is pretty much the first 2 semesters of programming courses you'd take in college and with my additional self stufy I probably won't learn much new programming wise till around my 3rd year in college.

If your school doesn't offer programming courses then fuck your school and go to the Vocational School that they offer and have them teach you.

AND!

The first simple game I want to make which should only take a few days is a networked pong type game except wayyy more awesome (super enhanced graphics and playable over a network).

Then after that I want to start work on a game that sort of resembles infinite 8 bit platformer (http://infiniteplatformer.com/) except with an actual character and better graphics and physics and what not.

Will see if I get motivated.

And for getting busted I was smoking the reefer.

Oh btw I'm 14 and just started learning to code in python (bout 3 weeks ago). Been reading a bit about it, on and off doing some shit. My dad does coding n shit so he helped me code a tic-tac-toe playing robot. And you say logical thinking is good? I'm one of those people who is good at logical kinda stuff, and goes spastic if things aren't logical(especially work-type things - I can spend hours ranting about how horrible middle school homework is, I'm not learning a thing in the classes because they're so damn easy - made for the fucking retarded average 14 year old, but still give such tedious work if you compare it to the learning involved.) But anyway, wanna give me some recommendations for learning to program? And as far as when I'm starting, will I have a head start over other students in highschool?

That's cool that you do programming and stuff.

Always wanted to do that.

AP Java is offered in my school, but all the outcasts take it so I stay away from that.

It's cool though.

I was debating going into computer engineering and sciences but I am really conscious about my self image, and it seems to me that the stereotype associated with that kind of career is the nerdy guy with glasses. Maybe it is just me being childish, but I know it pays well and I would think that there will always be job opportunities as computers are the future but just hard to decide. I'm about to start my last semester of High school so its getting pretty close for me to apply for University so the time is ticking...

At most of the presentations and shit I went to it was mostly well dressed slightly feminine men.

@Ethan - You'll be better off when you start taking programming courses regardless of what you learn now. But seriously just read a book. I read head first java front to back in the course of like 3 weeks when I was grounded and I went from like ehh to wow I actually know what i'm doing.  I doubt your school has a programming course specifically for python, more likely you'll learn either c++, java or c#. I highly recommended head first into java then just start buying the sun microsystems official books.

If you really want to learn python though get a book from O'Reilly Media. They have a picture of an animal on the front and are pretty easy to recognize.

Lucky Kat, in my highschool all the computer related classes where a series of google search tests with questions like "what does usb stand for?" and they called it shit like  "computer programming" and "graphic design".

Fucking fail highschool. So i had to go to TAFE (college) to do the highschool equivelent in graphics, but those fuckers lied about the course, saying the one i did leads into the one i actually wanted to do, when it didn't...

SO basically, highschool pointless, 1 year of TAFE, useless. FML
