Received a reply from the mathematician. Discuss.

This is a PEMDAS sort of thing.

To do this carefully, be sure to be explicit with the operations involved. Here:

48 / 2(9+3) = 48/2*(9+3) = 48/2*(12) = 48/2*12 = 24*12 = 288

The confusion (I suspect) comes from the fact that when someone physically writes down an equation like this they tend to write it as a single fraction, with "48" on top and "2(9+3)" on the bottom.

However, written out in the (ungainly) text form that would be:

48/(2(9+3)).

Writing stuff like this gives a lot of people pause. To avoid confusing the division operation with a fraction, you can always go back to the 3rd grade way of writing division: 48÷2*(9+3)

Long story short: 288.

Let me know if that clears anything up!

Shut Up Kid

i knew i was right ^_^

edit: okay on another forum were having a kind of similar debate thing whatever

anyways, heres our problem

(9*4)-3²+9*(-6)²

the answer, 369 or 351? i say 369

B - Brackets

I - Indices

D - Division

M - Multiplication

A - Addition

S - Subtraction

Brackets first always then indices ( powers ) ;

36-9+9*36

Then multiplication , then Addition, then subtraction so ;

-297 or 297, Depending if you rearranged it or not.

Eh just did that in my head, could be wrong.

Meathead.

Facedesk. You do addition before subtraction all the time. So what your equation should be is

36-(9+324)

36-333

= 297

No.

It's not in parenthesis. With division/multiplication and addition/subtraction, order doesn't matter.

If it derived from an equation then I was taught it did. Also, if it doesn't matter how comes there are 2 outcomes.

Where the fuck do you get these parenthesis

36-(9+324)

Think about it.

The brackets was only placed there to show the order which I did it in.

When you write it like 36-(9+324), you're placing a negative on the whole (9+324) when it really only affects the 9. -9+324.

36-9+324

Doing addition first

-9+324 = 315

36+315 = 351

Doing subtraction first

36-9 = 27

27+324 = 351

You lost.

Looks like I lost. Time to ask maths genius. Fair play Env. Fair play :shifty:

You guys are all wrong its 1296 see.

(9*4)-3^2 + 9*(-6)^2

(36)-9 + 9(36) 27+9(36)

(36)(36) = 1296 27+324

351
