Is Final Destination 6 on the cards?

Are there plans afoot for Final Destination 6? Or has the disappointing box office for Final Destination 5 scuppered them?

When The Final Destination was released in 2009, it quickly brought in $186m at the global box office, leading Warner Bros to tell us that it couldn’t resist making another movie. Hence, the far better Final Destination 5 has come along. It’s earned better reviews, too. The only problem is, it’s not been able to repeat The Final Destination’s box office performance.

As things stand, the new film has picked up $33m, which is half of the take of the last film. Final Destination 5 begins its international roll-out in the next week or two, meanwhile, and it’s likely to be that which determines the fate of the franchise.

Given that the movies cost around $40m apiece to make, it’s going to take around $100m in non-US box office, or significant disc sales, to persuade Warner Bros to fund a sixth film.

Moviehole chatted to the director of Final Destination 5, Steven Quale, about the possibility of a sixth movie, and he confirmed that he was pretty much at the whims of the box office.

“Never say never,” the director said. “We'll see how this one performs internationally and if it makes as much money as the fourth one, I'm sure Warner Brothers will want to make another one. And then the question for me will be just if we can get a script that can live up to this one because frankly I wouldn't want to go backwards in the same way some sequels do - once they get into the whole franchising thing they can get worse. But if we can make enough impact on an audience as we did here..."

Our guess is that Final Destination 6 is a bit of a long shot right now. But we’ll keep you posted…

I like how they called number 4 The Final Destination, implying it was the last one, and yet still they continue to produce this shit.
