Does it give defence experiance?

So if I want to summon a terrorbird, bull ant, or anything other familiar that helps, but it trains defense or controlled, will it automatically attack my target in a multi combat zone?

Not always, it sometimes takes a few seconds for it to react and then it will attack, especially if you call it to you it will wander off and attack your enemy. You'd probably be safe if you were running through a multi-zone and kept it close to you (like if you were penguin hunting, for example), but for anything longer than that it's probably not a good idea to bring it.
