There have been a total of seven "Saw" installments, with "Saw 3D: The Final Chapter" released last year. Lionsgate has been reluctant to continue the franchise, but since "Saw 3D" grossed $136 million on a $20 million budget, there was always the possibility that "Saw 8" may one day happen.

Now in an interview with CNBC, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns spoke about the potential merger with Summit Entertainment and revealed that there are plans to continue "Saw." He said: "I'm sure, some day, you’ll see 'Saw' back in the picture."

After "Saw 3D" hit theaters, there have been rumors that Lionsgate may reboot the franchise. But whatever happens, the studio will not make a move until they feel there is a good enough story to bring back the series. At the same time, outside of "The Hunger Games," Lionsgate doesn't really have any other franchises. And since "Saw" is still lucrative, it would not be wise to simply kill it.
