Help Making CD's

I recently got my license, and started to make a few CDs on iTunes for the car.

However, if I choose a playlist and burn songs to a blank CD with iTunes, it doesn't play in my CD Player. My friend uses a different program, and his work fine in my car. Also, my CDs that DON'T work in my car worked in another friend's car, and I don't know why.

My friend said it was because all my songs are .mp3, and need to be in a different format.

Does anyone know if this would solve the problem? If so, how would I reformat them? If not, what would you recommend to get them to work?
