Adam|Spakka Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Was at gym today and my mate was telling me about this thing the gym had that u hold in front of u and basically it sends an impulse through ur body, tells u ur bmi & ur bodyfat%. Tried it, all u do is enter ur age/height and yeh it told me i was 15% bodyfat, kinda weird since i think of myself as quite a big fatty, have quite a large gut & iv seen images of other people claiming to be around the same bodyfat levels and they look way more cut up than me. So my question is, am i really 15% bodyfat and just have terrible genetics, or is this thing inaccurate and wrong? Googled the machine and i think it was this i used: http://www.omron-healthcare.com/export/sites/default/_global/body_composition_monitor/body_composition_monitor_instruction_manual/IM-HBF306-E-03-08-08-EN.pdf

DeltaPapa Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Yeh seen them before, and yeh i wouldnt have thought you were 15% lol.
Tango_Oscar Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 They can only be used as a ROUGH guideline, it just knows the resistances of fat, water etc, and calculates it based on that, it doesnt take into account the fact you might have eaten, your bone density and other random variables. The most accurate way is the skin caliper test. BMI (Body mass index) = Weight (kg) / Height (M) squared for example if u weighed 100kg and was 2metres tall then your bmi would be 100/4 so it would be 25. Dont need a special tool to tell you that.

Thought bmi doesnt take into account how much muscle you have on? say a pro bodybuilder did it his bmi would say hes obese.

antO Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 (edited) "one of the most accurate method of calculating bf is dexa scan" would love to use but the nearest machine for me is 45mins by car and costs $85. http://www.measureup.com.au/body-composition pics adam? Edited June 16, 2012 by antO
Steroids Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 assuming you're not going to get tested in a proper facility where you're weighed in water etc in a lab. get fat callipers.
