Creating your own space nebuar effect

So is 4:46 am and this is the finished sig result. It's nice I'm having bit of an insomnia month, I guess I'll make use of my time and create a guide for anyone wanting to try something knew.

O.K, there are many different guides out there but this one is unique as it was just created out of trial and error testing on the spot and has not been perfected. There may be edits in the future as I try different things to give a better result.

Step 1. Deciding what type of nebular you would like you create.

To do this you can either search through different art gallery websites such as deviantart or simple google image search. Real life realism or artist design, there is no right or wrong in art as its all personal preference, self expression and all that jazz. For the point of this exercise I'll just be using this one as an example.

Now where do we begin?

You can use simple tequnices such as rendering clouds, using preset or downloaded brushes or even just rip an image and redesign it to your liking.

For this guide I'll show you how to make your own using simple effects.

Now you have chosen a nebular design, or something to use as a rough sketch, you will need stocks to manipulate. These stocks can be anything from images of clouds, water, rivers, or in this example I used an image of a planet.

First you want to copy the image a few times. It is up to you how many times or how strong the ripple will be but for the sake of this tut I will explain the way I managed to come to my final out come.

(Please try to reframe from copying this guide 100% unless you feel it is a must. Use your own initiative and style designs to create your own personal out come, use this as a tool.)

Crop the image down and position it where you feel you want your nebular to start forming.

Go - filter distort - ripple - 200

Copy the layer (Ctrl+J) move it and repeat.

Keep doing this until you have an image looking roughly like this.

Now you want to start making your background. Use your imagination, use c4d's stocks which you have manipulated or like I did, some simple "Grunge" brushes.

This is what the background looked like with the ripple layers turned off.

Now here is the fun part, adjusting the ripple layers to the background to create an effect. Using different colours, sizes, brushes, ripple strengths and positioning can cause an infinite amount of out comes. Have fun.

Here I set the layers to "overlay" and "soft light" until I got this.

Also remember to delete any unwanted parts you want. You can use a soft or a strong brush when deleting, different strengths to create a fading effect around the edges or use feathering if you feel more comfortable.

Now you want to work on lighting. You can either brush over certain points with a white or black brush and adjust the layer settings, create layer mask, or even use the image - adjustments settings to adjust them.

Also feel free to manipulate the colour to how ever you like. I like blue.

I also wanted to give it some flair, it seemed to be slightly dull so I adjusted the colours and lighting even more.

When you have something you are happy with, feel free to add anything els to the sig. For example, this is space and stars are needed.

You can create stars yourself by using a small brush tool 1-10 pixels, light and hard to create stars.

Small soft brush size = far away

Big hard brush = close up

If you're too lazy then just rip an image from google and adjust the layer settings using "image - adjustments - levels>auto>ect ect" and or changing the layer settings to "Darken/multiply>Lighten/screen/overlay"

Play around with settings until you get something you like

Lastly, add your own visual designs, boarders, text, animation ect ect

This is just an example, feel free to play around with different ideas and post results. I am always happy to see different peoples work and designs and if this guide helped you at all feel free to say so.

I have a strange attraction to nebula's. Should we ever make it into deep space in my lifetime I'll probably die staring at one.

I'm not too keen to learn about this just yet, I might get into GFX in the future. I just don't have the patience right now, because most of my "patience" is invested in OSR.
