d72 Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Not sure if this constitutes as a debate or just an off-topic topic, but the way technology has been advancing throughout the years is really starting to make me get goosebumps. I'm no conspiracist, but after looking at this latest piece of work I'm starting to have second thoughts on everything we've known. Lately, Google's come out with a new update on their tool Google Maps that lets you dive straight in at street level on city streets, allowing you to look at not only pedestrians walking, but also having the ability to go in straight at someone's front porch. To give you an example, I just typed in the postal code of Jagex's customer support bureau and this came up: My question to you is: Is technology getting way too far out of hand now? Because the way I'm seeing this right now doesn't make me wonder in awe about how much we've grown over the past couple of years, it's making me shit my pants knowing anyone has access to this type of information. (By the way, the title of this thread comes from the book 1984 by George Orwell, which is basically based on this kind of thinking) Thoughts?
Jim Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I saw Jagex's HQ on TV once. On a programme about unemployed people, he applied for a job with Jagex, that isn't the HQ, trust me. & No. He didn't get the job.
d72 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Maybe different office? Jagex has 2 :) Regardless, looking at Jagex's main office isn't what's of concern; It's more the fact of being able to see people on the street, and getting to the point where I can read the numbers off my mailbox. For safety reasons, I'm not gonna post that picture :p
Jim Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I don't care really. Here in the UK CCTV is fucking hectic, this is the same kind of thing. Also, you can request on Google to have your house removed.
d72 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Yeah, but what about the people who aren't aware of the service? It's still fucking creepy tbh
Cholesterol Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Google maps & the street view are a paedophile's paradise
watch me tb Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 my house isnt on there. they skipped basically my whole street.
Beastdefire Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 1984 - Good book. And about Google Maps Street View, by no means is it live. A van just drives around with a 360 degree camera on top of it and films everything once.
Adolesc3nt Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 yea they just sent a van with a camera on its roof through every street in the world. Sometimes you can see the rails on its roof. I wonder how long that took....
Scotty|w0rst Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 THIS WAS MY FIRST YEAR CLASS OMG@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Alright my thoughts on it summarized, Even if "big brother" was able to watch us? What is the big deal? As average citizens, we should have nothing to hide. If the government is looking for terrorists or criminals, then we should not have to worry about what the government uses to find these people because we are not doing anything wrong. Id rather have the government know where I am and what I am doing than have a terrorist blowing up a building and kill hundreds. Also "little brother" can keep tabs on what the government is doing because we have just as many technological advancements as they do. One of our biggest weapons against big brother is social networks. I forget the where it happened but when a country broke out in riots about a political issue, the government tried to keep it in the country but when someone tweeted videos of the riots, it got spread around the world. The government cannot idea everything. That is my view of "big brother"
il killzy il Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I think technology is getting too far sometimes... people can know where you live and alot of personal things about you...
II Alek II Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Well considering Google is not a government (yet), it isn't quite "Big Brother".
Archryda Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 pretty creepy. i googled my own house. its fucking weird.
Advent Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Google maps & the street view are a paedophile's paradise Uhm not really
gfdgfd Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Google maps & the street view are a paedophile's paradise Uhm not really Don't question Mr Smyth.
Achi Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Weel in Netherlands some wife accused Google cause she could see her cat in her window on street view thing. Well the Judge said that it isn't against the rules evry1 who would walk there could have seen her cat. Since this street view thing isnt Live, no1 is watching you... Sometimes I also think that technoligy is going to far. I don't tell alot of ppl that i smoke weed. And then a while ago i had to gave my pee to the doctor. And he found trash of weed there -.-'. The fucking nub caught me. Wish the technology wasnt this far :(.
Stand Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 lol tech is prob more advanced then we can even know. testing new things daily. Did you guys hear they send around unmanned google cars now. Yeah no drivers, look it up. The google cars are robotically controlled. No accidents except someone else rear ending the google car lol. humans fail. but yeah i guess it's kindve disturbing but you can go crazy worrying about this stuff. and the google maps thing is very very scary its like the owner of google is helping out criminals lol
Lip Job Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 Technology should and will always advance, the question is are the people with the power to use it putting it to it use in the right ways or not?
