Hey, I'm looking to get into better shape and was wondering what some good dietary and basic workout steps would be. For now I'm hoping to not go to a gym, so if there are any good home workouts I'd prefer those. Any help would be appreciated.

Posted

What are you looking for in particular, weight loss/gain? You looking to build muscle?
Do you play any sports?

Your diet plan and eating habits will also play a major role in any training.

My advice would be to stay away from all that protein and shit for now. since your only starting it would be a huge waste of time. There is a good few programmes out at the moment, I will need to check them but one is like P90x or P90 or somecrap, I will update it though. I believe that works on your core and everything

Well I'm a bit chubby so I'm looking to both lose fat and gain muscle. And no, I currently don't play any sports.

Cutting while gaining muscle mass is almost impossible unless you're on gear.

Calculate your TDE first, and when you have, subtract 500 from that. You now how your calorie intake you'll need to lose fat. This of course also goes along with the assumption that you'll be training at the gym. Some light weight training with cardio is recommend. Don't lift heavy since you're a complete beginner at this stuff.

Months down the line when you've reached your target weight you can start bulking aka gaining muscle. Just add 500 to your TDE and you'll have your bulking calorie intake.

There's also macros and stuff to discuss when it comes to diet, but there are some great guides on the forums that explain those way better than I can.

Good luck.

You're right, right now I'm not fully committed, I'm just taking shots in the dark looking for a place to start. I want to get in shape but really I'm not sure the best way to go about it and how to phrase my questions. I'm trying to learn the foundations PRIOR to going to the gym so I can make better use of my time when I'm there.

yh i read the line about not wanting to go gym and decided im not helping u.

To clear up some confusion, the reason I'm hesitant to go to the gym is because I'd really have no idea where to start when I get there. That's why I'm here. I want to know what I should do BEFORE going to the gym, so when I ultimately do go to the gym I have some understanding of what I'm doing and I was wondering if in the meantime there's anything I can be doing at home.

So basically I need to know:

- What should I know about lifting/working out in order to make going to the gym worthwhile?

- Is there anything I can do at home while  I learn more about lifting.

My TDEE looks like it's roughly ~2382, so in order to lose weight (fat) I'd need to shoot for a 1900 calorie daily intake along with working out?

When I started working at the gym I felt awkward as fuck. I didn't have a clue what I was doing and I looked retarded. After days of watching online videos of proper form I started to feel a little more comfortable, although I usually went with guys from my college. Now I just go by myself because I know proper technique for most workouts and generally lend people a hand with either spots or tips.

Read online articles, watch videos on youtube, speak to people who know what they're talking about. Personal trainers are a waste of money when you can get all that information for free. Everyone has to start somewhere, and that's what you need to learn. The gym far exceeds any home workout you will ever do.

Dietary basics are calories in need to > calories out. Healthy calories (whole wheat carbs (breads [not white], oats, pasta, rice), proteins (fish, eggs, lean ground meat, chicken, nuts), and healthy omega fats (fish, eggs) are essential to anyone working out. Empty calorie foods like junk food and beer are generally fine seeing you'll just expel them later, but not if you are intaking them constantly. When trying to put on weight you do less cardio (I still recommend a little bit of cardio such as swimming or cycling) so that you body doesn't spit the calories out. When losing weight you obviously lower your calorie intake, while still eating health foods, and improve cardio time so that you are burning the excess fats and nutrients your body isn't going to need. DO NOT TAKE A DIET PLAN. They are a waste of money.

I take 2 scoops of whey (33g protein) in the morning and at night, and usually a couple protein bars (33g protein ea). Protein supplements are very good when looking to put on muscle as they are a substitute for other meals where you can instead replace a protein with more pasta or rice, and are fast and easy. Fish oil tablets are good to take as they contain very healthy Omega 3s.

tldr; Eat healthy carbs, proteins, fats, don't fear the gym, learn proper technique, calories in > calories out, acquire aesthetics.

so basically you're asking for advice on how to waste your time at home because you don't know what you would do at the gym, when instead you could have us tell you what to do at the gym..?

No, I'm asking if someone could tell me or direct me somewhere that would tell me what, if anything, I should be doing before going to the gym. That could include workouts I should be doing at home, any significant dietary modifications, whether I should be taking supplements and if so what...

I also want to know what to be doing AT the gym, so if you can direct me to any good resources that would be appreciated.

What brand(s) would you suggest? Much appreciated by the way.

there's nothing you should be doing at home before going to the gym.. there are no prerequisites to doing a routine at the gym.

Should I start taking supplements? And do you have a suggested routine?

internet is your most powerfull research tool, u need to research for hours son. there are thousands of good articles for the broad questions you're bound to have at the start and for more specific questions just use google / search bar on bbing forums and your bound to come across a lot of people that has previously asked your question. thats exactly what i did when i started 5 years ago.

try this one out for size -

the stickies contain decent routines ("beginner" for u) that you can follow directly or tailor to suit u etc. and look through other peoples routines posted

Wear proper gym clothing, no wife beaters.
For losing weight split ur workouts 50/50 between cardio and lifting weights.
If your skinny and have trouble gaining weight then just lift weights.
Change your diet, eat anything in sight if ur skinny. Avoid fats/carbs if your trying to lose weight. IMO looking good is 80% nutrition 20%lifting+other

Find a friend to workout with.

Wear proper gym clothing, no wife beaters. - It doesn't matter what you wear as long as it promotes full motion movement, I wear tank tops and muscle shirts

For losing weight split ur workouts 50/50 between cardio and lifting weights. - NO

If your skinny and have trouble gaining weight then just lift weights. - NO, you eat more and lift light with high repetitions til you're comfortable lifting heavier weight

Change your diet, eat anything in sight if ur skinny. Avoid fats/carbs if your trying to lose weight. IMO looking good is 80% nutrition 20%lifting+other - You never want to avoid carbs as those are your primary source of energy. Fats you need and protein you need. You just lower the overall intake of all three.

Find a friend to workout with. -Yes, having someone to spot is always good

Try new things. -Sometimes works, it's better to do research on workouts before you do them, such as watch videos for proper form so you aren't injuring yourself

step 1 - join a gym

step 2- get a schedule, i recommend 3x 45-60minutes full body workout and 2-3x per week 45 minutes of cardo

step 3- stop eating crisps, donuts. soda, chocolate spread... anything bullshit with alot of sugar or what is not healthy

step 4- drink a protein shake right after your full body workout or quark before you go to bed.

step 5- if you can't get a schedule try to find one on the internet and maak a guide for yourselfs on how to perform them properly.

tips.

dont go for quick snacks

eat some fruiit errday.

get motivated

this should get you going.

if you want to ignore all of this and go to the gym later. put on some sick music and do something like 3-4x  10 pushups and increase pushups if you think you can every week to like 14. after that 16.

push your body to the max
