Russia's Upper House Approves Putin's Military Intervention Plan
BY ALASTAIR JAMIESON AND JIM MACEDA

MOSCOW — The Russian parliament’s upper house unanimously approved President Vladimir Putin’s request for a military intervention in Ukraine, according to a Kremlin statement Saturday.

The approval came within two hours of Putin appealing to parliament saying the move is needed to protect ethnic Russians and the personnel of a Russian military base in Ukraine's strategic region of Crimea.

But Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin — who Putin appointed as the official representative on the military action proposal — said Russian force in Ukraine may not be used quickly.

Karasin did not give a timeframe for military action and it was unclear whether Putin's announcement was merely intended to send a message to international powers that Russia would not back down over the future of Ukraine.

Hours before Putin's statement, Western foreign ministers issued calls for Russia to de-escalate the crisis in Crimea — echoing a similar warning from President Barack Obama that armed intervention would have "costs."

The request, made to the Russian Senate, follows a letter from the upper house to Putin appealing for the same.

The statement said: "Due to the extraordinary situation in Ukraine and the threat to the lives of Russian citizens and compatriots, and the personnel staff of Russia’s military forces based in Ukraine (Crimea), according to international agreement ... I submit a request to the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation for the use of military forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine until the social and political situation in the country normalizes."

Earlier Saturday, Ukraine accused Russia of sending 6,000 additional troops into Crimea Saturday, deepening a crisis in which both sides accused each other of trying to destabilize the region.

Alastair Jamieson reported from London. Sasha Mazikima contributed to this report. Reuters also contributed.

Civil War? You just said Russia is intervening in Ukraine's affair by sending in troops etc.

It's no longer a civil war... but WW3!

Definitely joking in that last line I crack myself up.

Will be interesting how this goes though as Obama already said their would be consequences if Russia sent in troops.

But if we ignore them sending troops into Ukraine it'd be the same as how we ignored Hitler when he was "only sending troops" into neighboring countries of Germany. Then we can also think about the chance that North Korea, an ally of Russia, could use this as a chance to hit South Korea and when we try to help Russia hits us then China and Japan come in. Although that is unlikely to happen it's still fun to think about.

the us and uk cant ignore anything if it kicks off as they have swore an oath or protect the ukraine if anything does happen after they split from the soviet union also its much harder to compare how the usa acted in ww2 than this as the times are much different and the consequences for both economic and war reason are very different

tbh the worst thing that will happen is crimea split off and joins russia or creates its own state i hardly think russia will start ww3 as they would never win vs uk/usa and it would bring russia to its knees in terms of its economy because if war did break out, russia would have trade sanctions placed on them almost immediately the only thing that would save russia would be if china sided with them as they seem to like russia more than the usa however the usa is a much bigger trading partner so i don't think they would want to lose that relationship and therefore stay out of the drama for the most part unless something seriously big did kickoff

His statement is vague and blunt. But he's right to some degree.

No one would be smart to start a conflict with america and its allies. Unless they have some super elaborate plan, which at this point I highly doubt.

Treaties need to be signed asap. Certain people need to be taken out of power. And people need to stop trying to use blind violence to solve political problems.

If it wasn't for the innocent people living in the Ukraine, I'd say let the idiots kill themselves. But there are women and children, none of which deserve these happenings in their lives.

Every time I hear about this, it makes me want to go build a house in the middle of nowhere and live peacefully, far far away from the growing idiotic populations.

his statement is not vague its idiotic and makes people from the US look like idiots and thats why you have the stereotype of being self important assholes and what he said reinforced that completely, it doesnt explain anything about this topic and it attacks another country that has no involvement with the situation

the reason that the uk/usa are going to be involved is because above all else they signed a treaty saying they will protect the ukraine in an act of war other than that countries will have little interest in getting involved  especially if they don't have anything to lose witch the us really doesn't have anything to lose if the ukraine did fall apart

also if any country could stand up to the US it would be russia im pretty sure they still have more nukes than any other country on this planet so unless the US has some hidden away (which i no doubt believe they probably do) russia could easily wipe anyone that they wanted off the face of the earth if it came to it

also russia has not used violence at all yet all they have done so far is do what they were asked to do by the prime minister of crimea, is it to intimidate people and help persuade a move towards joining russia yes however it isn't illegal in anyway they also have an interest in that certain area also as they have military stationed there so obviously want to protect that tbh its not really all that different from how the us would act if it was the other way round

also i really don't see how they are "idiots" i mean if you are having force used against you because you started a peaceful protest would you not fight back? how would you feel if obama made a move that 70% of the US population hated and when they protested he simply used riot police to oppress your views? would you then be that idiot that should just kill themselves

Either way, there are different routes to be taken, that could help this issue along.

I call them idiots because they (everyone involved) are handling the issue completely wrong.

And as we speak there is a stand-off with the Ukraine soldiers and Russian Forces. Russians ordering the Ukraine soldiers to stand down.

Russia is trying to take over another country. And a country that is our friend.

I guarantee that you'd hope the U.S comes to your countries aid in a time like that.

And yes, the U.S has many stockpiled Nukes.

Most hidden is Salt mines around the country.

Also @Trev;

You can see why it's funny to see America jumping out at Russia for intervening in another countries affairs when America's always invading shit, looks pretty bad that the US is intervening on something as small as a civil war in an ex-Soviet state while constantly invading middle eastern countries etc while crying that Russia and China keep vetoing UN intervention requests.

Perhaps either logic just isn't sufficient in this planet or someone's lashing out like an angry child.
